I don't blog much these days but something today has got my heckles up!

Yesterday the archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, made a very bland statement. He said some aspects of Sharia law were inevitable in the UK. no big deal, after all Christian church of England Cannon law is part of UK law and the Jews have been practicing their own law within the UK legal framework for ages, without anyone in the UK noticing.

So why the massive explosion of outrage yesterday and today? Because the UK is stupid. Because very few people in the UK know what Sharia is or what it means. Because no one knows or cares that a few aspects of Sharia law within the UK will be has hard to notice as the Jewish equivalents. People just assume that suddenly all women will have to where Burkhas and that people will be chopping hands off left, right and centre. In fact, no one is suggesting that any criminal law be dealt with for anyone by anything other than the normal UK courts. It is only being suggested that some people can choose to opt into a Sharia court and agree to settle their civil problems in that way.

In practice many people already do this by seeking advice from legal experts abroad. Better is it not to have such advice given from regulated and licensed providers in the UK?

But would it work in the UK? I believe it works fairly harmlessly in Canada but we will have to see how experiments go.

Shouldn't the UK just have Chritsian/secular law? Why? We colonised the world and globalised it. What makes us think we can keep this island exclusively white? The UK space does not belong to its white inhabitants. People of other races, particularly those who are born here or have UK citizenship, have the same rights as everyone else to campaign for what they want.

So is this just a lot of hot air and hubris? Yes! People are confused and not thinking it through. What we are left with is borderline racism. A few years ago in the UK lots of right-wing journalists thought that we were about to be inundated with predatory homosexuals that would stalk our school corridors trying to molest children. Someone then noticed that actually homosexuality is just not very dangerous at all.
