The whole truth and nothing but the truth...

Sharia Law and Stupidity

I don't blog much these days but something today has got my heckles up!

Yesterday the archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, made a very bland statement. He said some aspects of Sharia law were inevitable in the UK. no big deal, after all Christian church of England Cannon law is part of UK law and the Jews have been practicing their own law within the UK legal framework for ages, without anyone in the UK noticing.

Anti-Terrorism Measures - Here we go again

It's that time of year again. A new Prime Minister wants to show he's not "Soft on Terror" and so has revamped the UK's anti-terrorism measures.

This time vehicle exclusion zones are in, exterior security checkpoints on buildings are in, vehicle barriers are in, face recognition is in, number plate recognition is in, longer detention without trial is in.

Out go strict controls about what can be taken on board an aircraft.

Common sense went out a long time ago.

Solve UK Housing Problems

How to beat the UK housing Crisis

Today, Gordon Brown, our lovely new Prime Minister, let Parliament know his ideas and priorities for the coming term of office. Top of the agenda was housing. For those of you that don't know, the UK has a housing crisis. Even flats the size of shoe boxes sell for 6 times the average salary and many core workers can't afford to get on the housing market.

Chagos Islanders Win Stunning Victory

After many years of battling the British Government, islanders who were illegally evicted from their Indian Ocean homes have won the right to return home.

The decision was actually made several years ago, but a disgraceful series of increasingly desperate appeals by Tony Blair's administration attempted to reverse previous courts' decisions.

The Chagos Islands are considered to be strategically important and the US military, which lease the islands from the UK. They have been used to launch bombing raids on Afghanistan and Iraq as part of the so called "War on Terror".

Free Alan Johnston (and everyone else)!

As I write this, Alan Johnston has been held captive for 57 days somewhere in Gaza. Quite rightly his kidnap has caused international outrage and people across the community in Gaza are campaigning for his release. Journalists who work in Gaza do a dangerous job and keep the world in touch with some of the horrors which have been inflicted upon Palestine by the US/Israeli alliance.

Justin Webb's Pro-American Rant

In the second part of his pro-American rant BBC journalist Justin Webb raised some theories that are crying out to be debunked.

In the article Webb suggested that the world blames the United States for its problems, that everyone sees America as a scapegoat. But, he asks, are some of the world’s problems “the result of local attitudes to poverty, local attitudes to honesty in government, and local attitudes to the rule of law?”

Putin is a Despot

Vladimir Putin today made it clear to the world that even the most basic peaceful protest by ordinary citizens is too much of a threat to his regime. As general elections grow closer dissent has grown louder from those who miss Russia's brief flirtation with democracy in the post communist era.

Todays supression of free speech and violation of the basic right to protest was a sad reminder that Russia, despite its elections, is no longer a free nation.

Why we hate America

A response to a BBC article by Justin Webb in which the author rather patronizingly suggested that worldwide anti-Americanism is nothing more than old-world bias. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the pro-USA lobby often uses allegations of prejudice and racism to deflect legitimate criticism from US policy.

Bin Laden, Hitler, Sharon or Ahmadinejad : Who said what?

Just a little game. Here are eleven quotes from, in no particular order, Osama Bin Laden, Ariel Sharon, Adolf Hitler and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to work out who said what. The quotes are real, but so as not to make it too obvious I have replaced country and religious names with planet names like "mars" and "Venus". Anything I changed is in italics. Please use the comments section to tell me what you think.

Sally Clark, why was she sent to prison anyway?

Sally Clark has died aged 42. Another victim of British Justice.

For those of you who don't know, Sally was imprisoned for the murder of her two children and then released three years later when forensic experts changed their mind and realized that important parts of the prosecution case were based on dubious science. For a full run down of the case check it out on the BBC here.

The question I want to raise here though is not about miscarriage of justice. It is about how society treats people that have done wrong.
